Geotechnical surveys at former Montana missile sites
A scientist from Water & Environmental Technologies logs a soil sample’s lithology at a former Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missile alert facility near Conrad, Mont., Aug. 12, 2025. Tubes are packaged and sent to a laboratory for further testing of material properties. WET, an environmental consulting firm in Butte, Mont., was subcontracted by Northup Grumman, the prime contractor for the Sentinel ICBM modernization project, for pre-decisional geotechnical investigations at 13 decommissioned Minuteman sites in Malmstrom Air Force Base’s 564th Missile Squadron complex.
