Welcome to Team Malmstrom!

INTRODUCTION

Congratulations on your assignment to Malmstrom Air Force Base!

You have a lot to look forward to in the gorgeous state of Montana--yes, it can get cold here during the winter, but it also gets very warm during the summer. The base, nestled into the city of Great Falls, is an integral part of the local communities. The people are friendly, helpful and honestly glad to have you here.

If you like to fish, hunt, or consider yourself in general an outdoor or winter sport enthusiast, you'll find facilities and surroundings of Great Falls and Montana to suit your taste. Malmstrom is just a drive away from national parks like Yellowstone, Glacier and Banff, and major cities like Billings, Bozeman and Missoula.

The host unit, the 341st Missile Wing, is one of three intercontinental ballistic missile bases in the Air Force. The base's other major weapons system is the UH-1N Huey helicopter, assigned to the 40th Helicopter Squadron.

Please use this guide as an aid to getting acquainted with Malmstrom and the educational, recreational and service facilities available. We have made every attempt to ensure the information contained in this guide is correct. However, some things are subject to change.

HELPFUL INFORMATION

TRAVELING TO MALMSTROM

If you're traveling to Malmstrom in the summer, you'll find the weather is warm and pleasant. However, if you're traveling in late autumn, winter or early spring, make sure your car is in good mechanical condition and properly winterized.

Due to the sometimes harsh winter conditions, most people will find an engine block heater a necessity for their vehicle. The device, which is easily attached, will allow for easier engine turnover on cold mornings, especially if your vehicle is not kept in a garage. Block heater parts and installation are available at base and local service stations and automotive dealers as well.

Blankets and extra clothing for all passengers, along with basic survival items: matches, candles, a first aid kit, non-perishable food, fresh water and automotive tools such as jumper cables and tire chains are good ideas to pack. Most residents recommend using all-weather tires year-round, with the option to use studded snow tires between October 1 to May 31. The most common tip for driving in the winter is to go slow, brake early and always have at least half a tank of gas.

FIREARMS

Newly assigned personnel have 10 duty days upon in-processing to report to their command support staff and register all personally owned firearms and unusually dangerous weapons, to include air soft, BB, paintball guns and similar devices.

POFs will never be stored in dormitories, billeting or temporary housing. The authorized storage location for personnel residing in the dormitories, billeting or temporary housing is the 341st Security Forces Group Armory located in Building 500.

CLIMATE

At Malmstrom AFB, the summers are short, warm and mostly clear, and the winters are freezing, snowy, windy and partly cloudy. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 18°F to 87°F and is rarely below -8°F or above 96°F. It gets pretty windy, up to more than 60 miles per hour at times, due to wind accelerating from the south and southwest as it flows over the Rocky Mountains. The northern-tiered base also lives up to its reputation for heavy snowfall during winter months, with an annual average of around 60 inches of snow. This heavy snowfall, in combination with poor visibility, high winds and dangerously low wind chill temperatures occasionally combine to make travel virtually impossible.

The city's record for the most snowfall in a 24-hour period is 16.5 inches. Average high temperature for January is 35 degrees, average low temperature is 15 degrees. The coldest temperature ever recorded here is 26 degrees below zero (not considering wind chill).

Despite the daunting temperatures, some beautiful weather phenomena are a gift of the winter. Falling ice crystals produce "pillars of light" during frigid conditions under clear skies, and radiant splashes of color appear against the night sky during active displays of the aurora borealis, commonly known as the northern lights.

Summers are gorgeous here, with expansive blue skies and vibrant sunsets as the backdrop behind colorful mountains and lush grass. Residents thaw under the hot sun and enjoy average highs in July around 84 degrees with lows of 52 degrees. Thunderstorms are also a common sight in the summer, and on average, our annual liquid precipitation is 15 inches.

Montana's climate offers a variety of weather to enjoy. There's a little bit of everything for everyone!
