Geotechnical surveys at former Montana missile sites
Mobile drilling rig operators John Beard and Casey Wedig collect a soil sample at a former Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missile alert facility near Conrad, Mont., Aug. 12, 2025. Wiley Drilling of Butte, Mont., was subcontracted by Northrup Grumman for geotechnical borings that will inform Sentinel ICBM modernization project decisions. Samples were taken to a depth of 70 feet and sent to a lab to determine material properties. The remaining hole was converted to a well to monitor ground water depths over time.
