Little Bighorn
A special black-plated marker, center, on Last Stand Hill indicates where Lt. Col. George A. Custer, commander of the Seventh Cavalry regiment, died June 25, 1876, at the Battle of Little Bighorn near present-day Garryowen, Mont. In 1890, the Army erected 249 white marble headstones across the battlefield to show where each of Custer’s men had fallen during the battle. In 1999 the National Park Service began placing red granite markers at known Cheyenne and Lakota casualty sites to help give a balanced interpretation of the conflict.
