Old Prison Museum
On April 16, 1959, a riot broke out in the state prison at Deer Lodge, Mont. Inmates seized two rifles, killed the deputy warden and took 23 hostages. Two days later, soldiers from the Montana National Guard blasted the northeast tower of the cell house with a bazooka and stormed the building, ending the 35-hour stand-off. The damage caused by the rocket is still visible today. (U.S. Air Force photo / John Turner)
