Old Prison Museum

The red brick cell house located inside the old Montana state prison’s sandstone walls was built in 1912 using convict labor, and added 200 cells to the prison complex. The gray administration building was built in 1931 to receive prisoners, house essential services including the infirmary, dining room, kitchen and bakery and to provide offices for social workers, psychiatrists, chaplains and the deputy warden. The state prison in Deer Lodge, Mont., was closed in 1979. (U.S. Air Force photo / John Turner)
