She said giving other squadron members a chance to spend time with their children over the holidays is a gift in and of itself.

That is why Capt. Janet Dewese, 10th Missile Squadron ICBM combat crew flight commander, is stepping up to make the holiday season a little brighter for her flight members and her squadron. She is posting out to the missile fields during the time of year when most people enjoy relaxing with family and taking time away from work.

"I know by going out, it gives someone with kids or plans for the holidays an opportunity to spend time with their family," she said. "Out in the field, they will prepare a lovely meal for all the folks on-site, so it should be nice."

The Metter, Ga., native has been at Malmstrom for three years, and said if she was not posting out to the missile field, she would be spending the holiday with her husband, Steve.

"If Steve and I were able to spend the holiday together, we would do the Dewese tradition of skiing and snowboarding," the 19-year Air Force veteran said.

ICBM combat crew members today maintain the deterrence that was established by those who manned those same consoles before them during the Cold War.

"We provide 'top cover' which allows the ground forces the opportunity to fight for freedom and democracy," the captain said. "It's an honor serving my country during the holidays."
