E4L: Air Force officials discuss new e-mail accounts

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (AFPN) -- Air Force officials began sending notifications to the workforce this month about the new E4L, or "E-Mail for Life" accounts.  Everyone is receiving a new @us.af.mil address that will be used for the duration of his or her employment. 

This has led people to misunderstand that they must somehow start managing this new account or start forwarding information somehow. 

Capt. Jason Fields, an E4L project manager, said that actually there's no real need to manage the account at this point and that all e-mails are forwarded to an individual's current location-based e-mail address. 

He said people seem concerned about changing names or unit designations. Until the system is completely operational, bases will continue to manage how names, ranks and units appear in the Global Address List. 

Giving everyone this new address is the first step in eventually consolidating the 14-plus e-mail and active directory systems into a streamlined architecture. Once that is done, it will reduce costs associated with running multiple implementations at the various locations.  

Air Force officials are starting to consolidate these directory systems within Air Mobility Command. As funding is allocated, they'll move to consolidate the other stateside major commands before finishing with the overseas commands. 

Once the delivery systems are consolidated, then people will be able to manage changes to their E4L accounts with regard to name and unit changes. 

Until then, people should just be aware of the process and understand that they can give out the E4L address, and they'll only need to access the current GAL system for mail. 

For those who have not received their E4L address notification or would like to verify where their E4L address is forwarding, they can visit the Air Force Portal and click on the E4L link. Those in joint billets also should visit the Portal page to ensure they have an E4L account created and that it is forwarding to their current military account.
