Wall of Fame showcases perfect PT scorers

On a recent temporary duty assignment to Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., one member of the Fitness and Sports Center staff made an observation while there and brought the idea back to Malmstrom to incorporate into the recognition programs at the gym.

The Wall of Fame board, broken down by groups, recognizes all the individuals who have scored a perfect 100 percent on their physical training tests.

"This is a huge accomplishment and I liked the idea Vandenberg had to recognize those who have achieved it," said Senior Airman Shane Flahaut, a certified personal fitness trainer at the Fitness and Sports Center here. "Besides, it gives the group commanders a reason for some friendly rivalry between them."

The board has been up since January and includes all the names of those who scored 100 percent in 2007 as well as those who have done so since it went up. Those who earn a perfect score will have their name added as soon as they bring in a signed scoring from their unit fitness manager, or the unit fitness manager notifies the Fitness and Sports Center staff of the perfect score. Names remain on the board for one year.

Some of the names posted now will be due to take their annual test again in the coming months. If they pass with a perfect score again, they will be re-added to the Wall of Fame.

Surprisingly enough, nearly the full spectrum of the rank structure is represented on the Wall of Fame - from Airmen through Colonel - and it even includes one civilian employee.

Eric Thayer is a community readiness consultant with the Airman and Family Readiness Center and he is preparing to take the Air Force PT test for the fourth time in May. He has taken the test at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, twice, scoring a 100 percent both times, and asked to be tested again here, with the same outcome.

Mr. Thayer weight trains at the gym three times a week and also runs 6.2 miles on the weekend with his dog. He also tries to fit in a day or two of extra cardio when his schedule permits.

"I wanted to test myself because I like to stay in shape and it represents a challenge for me," Mr. Thayer said. "Also, even as a civilian, I am technically a member of my squadron so why shouldn't I be in shape, as well as the active-duty members?"

Fellow Mission Support Squadron employee, 1st Lt. Miranda Thompson, Chief of Transaction Management, has taken three PT test in her short Air Force career and has maxed two of them.

She typically works out six days a week, running or taking the spinning class. She also plays basketball and volleyball and does some weight training.

"I have been playing organized sports since fourth grade so it's something I love to do," she said.

Lieutenant Thompson plans to keep her perfect scoring going when she tests again in September because "I get to move up in the age bracket giving me a few more seconds to complete the run and a few less crunches and push-ups to do."

Twenty-eight year Air Force veteran and Wall of Fame achiever Chief Master Sgt. Richard Riddle also has multiple perfect scores to his credit. The medical group superintendent has taken the current PT test four times, scoring an91.6 the first try, and maxing the scores the past three times.

His exercise routine includes two days of cardiovascular training for 30 minutes followed by stretching. The third day is weight training to include push ups and he tries to do abdominal work on each visit, as well.

"The fourth day I take off, however, consistency is the key [to success]," he said.

Only 10 percent of active-duty Air Force members achieve a 100 percent on their PT test, according to Airman Flahaut.
