Malmstrom’s Wing One Association hosted a tri-tip cook-off at the Grizzly Bend June 13.

Six teams grilled, smoked and barbecued their unique versions of a beef tri-tip – a cut from the tri-tip roast, part of the bottom sirloin.

Teams were authorized to start any time of the day, meaning the master smokers could smoke their tri-tip from early in the morning until the event kicked off at 3:41 p.m.

“We wanted to boost morale of the base and get our first Wing One event officially out there to let folks know that the Wing One Association is back,” said Staff Sgt. Mariah Shaner, 10th Missile Squadron commander support staff and Wing One Association board member. “The vision we have for this organization is to host various wing-wide events for people to come hang out, take a break and enjoy themselves.”

Once the teams were finished heating the meat to the right temperature, it was cut and served to guests who attended the event.

Guests could vote by placing a ticket into a bowl on each team’s table, earning a vote toward claiming the title of tri-tip master.

“The biggest thing we were hoping people would get out of this event was to take a break and enjoy themselves and each other, but ultimately that they had fun,” Shaner said. “We also hosted this event to raise money for our funds for the Global Strike Challenge competitors.”

Senior Master Sgt. Tim Jez, 741st Maintenance Squadron vehicle and equipment section chief, and Master Sgt. Paul Mantel, power, refrigeration and electrical NCO in charge, won the competition.

“Please come out and support our competitors during our Global Strike Challenge Kickoff next Thursday, June 20, at the Grizzly Bend as they begin their journey,” Shaner said. “Be sure to keep a look out for various events and volunteer opportunities we will be hosting for your chance to take a break and have a great time.”
