8/2/2012 - MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- The 341st Security Forces Squadron has begun upgrading its Defense Biometrics Identification System as part of a scheduled enhancement to base security and is planned to be complete today. DBIDS is the system linked to the handheld scanners used at the base gates by security forces Airmen.

The upgrade allows automatic registration of all Department of Defense ID cards registered in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Registration System. This means first-time visitors with properly DEERS-enrolled ID cards will no longer have to visit the Visitor Control Center to register. The automatic registration could potentially take up to five minutes to complete, but this is the only delay Airmen should see after the upgrade. It is essentially a real-time system.

Short-term and long-term passes will still be issued primarily through the Visitor Control Center and current DBIDS cards will be replaced through attrition. The final product will be a more reliable ID card checking system and provide a safer environment for Team Malmstrom members.
