Steady ground
Contractors load a steel pipe into the Soil Nail Launcher July 14 on Forest Grove Road near Lewistown, Mont. The launcher fired galvanized steel pipe, called soil nails, into the embankment of the road, where a land slide occurred in May. The nails travel at more than 200 miles per hour into soils to provide anchors for wire mesh and concrete that will prevent further landslides. Since the machine can operate from the roadway, the wetland below was untouched. (U.S. Air Force photo/Senior Airman Dillon White)
