Mountain Pine Beetles
A close-up of the pitch oozing from the tree bark of a Scoth pine tree shows a mountain pine beetle trapped within it. In the early stages of infestation, the tree's natural defense is to ooze pitch to expel the insect. Eventually, the beetles overpower the tree and take away their ability to produce pitch.
