Basic moral values guide chaplain's assistant Published April 26, 2007 By Airman 1st Class Emerald Ralston 341st Space Wing Public Affairs Office MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- Senior Airman Sarah Pizano, 341st Space Wing Chaplain's Assistant, has one major goal in life - to help people. "I believe we're here to do more than just serve ourselves," said Airman Pizano. "I think we're here not just to live our lives, but to help others who are struggling to make it through." Although she didn't initially sign up to be a chaplain's assistant, Airman Pizano certainly fits the part with her positive and encouraging nature. "Actually, one of the most memorable times in the Air Force for me was when I got to work at Lackland AFB at the Basic Military Training chapel," Airman Pizano said. "It was a good experience because I was in the same position those trainees were at one time and I got to see these new people and encourage and relate to them." Airman Pizano also enjoys volunteering and helping those less fortunate than herself. "I really enjoyed volunteering for the Rescue Mission downtown, especially during the holidays," Airman Pizano said. "We went to help serve food and just be there with them several times during the holidays. So I like helping the homeless or unfortunate because sometimes that helps you remember the things you have that you might take for granted." You can help people every day by doing simple things like saying hello to all the people you encounter each day, Airman Pizano said. While helping people is a top priority for Airman Pizano, her official duty as the readiness manager for the chapel includes getting chapel staff scheduled for mobility requirements, keeping training folders up to date, participating in deployment lines as well as helping out with prayer services on the weekends. As for her off-duty time, this mother-to-be enjoys hanging out with her husband, going to school, going to movies and exploring different areas around the state. Not surprisingly, Airman Pizano said if she could meet one famous person, that person would be Oprah Winfrey, another Good Samaritan like herself. "Everyone looks up to her, not for any reason other than she helps people and that's what she is most known for," Airman Pizano said. "Everything ties in to helping people." She's had her share of help also, with six different supervisors she credits for giving her encouragement and support, along with her family. "All of my supervisors have been awesome," the Texas native said. "I've had six, and they all led by example and never deviated from what a good Air Force supervisor should be." Her leaders helped mold her into what she is today. Airman Pizano also said she simply wants to be happy in life and do her part to help make others happy, as well. "I don't know how to explain it other than helping people is what we do, and I enjoy doing it," she said.
