MALMSROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- According to the National Fire Protection Association, three out of five home fire deaths between 2009 and 2013 were caused by fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
Smoke alarms are the first line of defense when a fire strikes, allowing extra time needed to escape safely. Working smoke alarms can also cut the risk of dying in reported home fire in half.
This year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week, “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years,” focuses on knowing how old smoke alarms are and replacing them if older than 10 years.
The NFPA also recommends installing smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area, as well as on every level of the home. Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries.
