Fire prevention week

MALMSROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. --  

According to the National Fire Protection Association, three out of five home fire deaths between 2009 and 2013 were caused by fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

Smoke alarms are the first line of defense when a fire strikes, allowing extra time needed to escape safely. Working smoke alarms can also cut the risk of dying in reported home fire in half.

This year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week, “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years,” focuses on knowing how old smoke alarms are and replacing them if older than 10 years.

The NFPA also recommends installing smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area, as well as on every level of the home. Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. 

Malmstrom will be participating in Fire Prevention Week, designated Oct. 9-15, with the following events scheduled on and around base:

Sunday, Oct. 9

  • Children’s fire truck ride, 1 - 5 p.m., base fire station, Building 349

Monday, Oct. 10

  • Sparky at Loy Elementary School, 8 - 11 a.m. 

  • Announce winners of “Don’t Wait - Check the Date! Replace Smoke alarms every 10 years” poster contest at Loy Elementary School

  • Tours of fire department, 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., call 731-3560 to schedule

  • Handout fire safety education pamphlets, 5 - 7 p.m.,  housing area

Tuesday, Oct. 11

  • Fire truck with Sparky, 10 a.m., base library

  • Handout fire safety education pamphlets, 5 - 7 p.m., housing area

Wednesday, Oct. 12

  • Fire education display, 8:30 - 11:30 a.m., Commissary

  • Fire truck with Sparky, 9 a.m., Child Development Center

  • Handout fire safety education pamphlets, 5 - 7 p.m., housing area

Thursday, Oct. 13

  • Fire education display, 8:30 – 11:30 a.m., Base Exchange

  • Fire Truck with Sparky at CDC for Part –Day Program, 9 a.m.

  • Fire Truck with Sparky at Building 4000 for Home Day Care Program, 10:30 a.m.

  • Tours of fire department; 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.; call 731-3560 to schedule

  • Handout fire safety education pamphlets, 5 - 7 p.m., housing area

Friday, Oct. 14

  • Fire Muster Competition, 8 a.m. – noon, BX parking lot
