Fun in the mud

MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. --  The 341st Maintenance Group hosted the base’s first mud run Aug. 26.

Senior Master Sgt. Eric Butt, 341st Missile Maintenance Squadron first sergeant, said that the mud run was designed for all ages.

“The run included (adults) and children in fun events that also tasked them physically,” said Butt.

Approximately 20 children and 60 adults competed in the mud run.

The event took several weeks to plan, and was successful because of the efforts and support of volunteers.

"I like to help out so individuals can participate in events like these," said Airman 1st Class Timothy Culp, 741st Missile Security Forces Squadron flight member, who helped fill approximately 50 sand bags for the mudder. "I like to volunteer and get involved in as many events as I can."

To accommodate age differences, the mud run was split into two parts.

The first part included only children to maintain the integrity of the competitive aspect.

The children’s competition started behind the fire station and included a sand bag carry and a one mile run which ended in a mud pit.

The adult’s event started at Sun Plaza Park and included a 5K run with different obstacles including a tire flip, a sand bag carry and a mud pit.

“It is a great team building event,” said Senior Airman Patrick Nelson, 341st Munitions Squadron maintenance scheduler.

The run ended behind the gym with a mystery event involving a low crawl through an obstacle course in the mud.

“When members are going through the different obstacles, it tends to build teamwork,” said Butt.

The winners of the competition received ultimate bragging rights.

“It was an awesome event (to be in) with my squadron,” said Nelson. “I had a lot of fun.”
