More than 60 runners participated in multiple events during Malmstrom Air Force Base's Second Annual Striker Life Half Marathon at the Fitness Center on July 10.

The 13.1-mile race has been growing in popularity since the first competition in August of last year, offering an athletic outlet for Airmen to showcase the hard work they put into becoming their best physical self.

"It's a great thing for the people of Malmstrom," said Capt. Carlos Colon, 341st Force Support Squadron sustainment services flight commander. "The half marathon offers more than just a race to run, people have a chance to get out for a little while and connect with one another while enjoying something they like to do."

Runners also had the option of participating in a 2K Dog 'N' Jog run, 5K run, 10K run, and a squadron 5K dash. The event offered many activities for family and friends to enjoy whether they ran in one of the races or just came to watch the athletes compete for first place.

First place for the half marathon male finishers went to 2nd Lt. James Walmsley, 490th Missile Squadron ICBM deputy combat crew commander, with a time of 1:09:59.31. First place for the female finishers in the half marathon went to Jacqueline Maillett, 341st Medical Operations Squadron Health and Wellness Center dietitian, with a time of 1:46:07.16.

Prizes for the races included marathon T-shirts, medals, trophies, gift cards and a $100 prize for the half marathon winner. Doggie bags were also given as prizes for participants in the 2K Dog 'N' Jog.

"I like how they offer these different events," said Val Kranzel, 341st MDOS dental technician. "A lot of people like to run with their pets when they exercise outside so this is great that we can participate in a race like this."

Team Malmstrom members are already preparing for next year's Third Annual Striker Life Half Marathon. Every year the event coordinators strive to bring more opportunities for people to get out of the normal day-to-day tasks and enjoy the company of their peers while competing in a sport that pushes athletes to their limits and challenges every competitor to be the best they can be.
