It is that time of year again -- ghosts, goblins, pirates and princesses will all soon be strolling the community on the hunt for sweet treats. With Halloween just around the corner, Balfour Beatty Communities would like to share a few tips and tricks for a safe holiday.

Choose a safe-minded costume
  • Use face paint instead of masks to avoid obstructing view
  • Attach reflectors or glow-in-the-dark elements to costumes or create a glow-in-the-dark trick or treat bag
  • Avoid trips and falls by wearing costumes that fit properly and are not too long
  • Only wear costumes that are flame-retardant
Drive and walk safely
It is a chilling fact that on Halloween children are twice as likely to be hit and killed by an automobile as any other day. To ensure that children stay safe when crossing the street, drivers are encouraged to stay focused, avoid distractions and drive slowly.

Parents should talk to their children about the importance of looking both ways before crossing the street as well as crossing at corners rather than zigzagging between houses. To lessen the possibility of tripping on property, owners should remove any obstacles on their sidewalk and steps.
