Stanley nominated for brigadier general

MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. --  Col. Robert W. Stanley II, 341st Missile Wing commander, was nominated by the president Jan. 8 for promotion to brigadier general.

Nominations for Stanley, along with 30 other Air Force officers, will now be sent to the U.S. Senate for confirmation. Included in those nominations is another name familiar to Malmstrom, Col. Stephen L. Davis, former vice commander here.

"I'm humbled by the nomination; however, the real story here is the team at Malmstrom Air Force Base that made my nomination possible," Stanley said. "I could have never achieved such an opportunity without this stellar group of Airmen."

During his time as commander here, Stanley oversaw execution of the wing's mission to defend America with safe, secure, effective nuclear forces and combat-ready Airmen. He led the base through numerous inspections and exercises to include the largest and most complex Nuclear Weapon Accident/Incident Exercise the Defense Reduction Threat Agency has ever conducted.

"Wing One has constantly fired on all cylinders during my time as commander here," Stanley said. "I cannot say enough good things about the team I've had the privilege to lead."

Those who know him best acknowledged the nomination as something that will better the Air Force.

"It's a great honor to serve alongside someone of Colonel Stanley's caliber," said Col. Marné Deranger, 341st MW vice commander. "With this promotion nomination, the Air Force is acknowledging the leadership capacity he brings to the table every day."

From the highest ranks around the base to the lowest, many recognize Stanley as a leader they will not soon forget.

"Colonel Stanley is a leader, not a manager," said Senior Airman Jonathan Bailey, 341st Medical Operations Squadron bioenvironmental technician. "What I admire most about him is that he is grounded and tells things like they are. He genuinely cares about the civilians and Airmen of all ranks at Malmstrom Air Force Base."

Colonel Stanley was commissioned through ROTC at Purdue University in 1988. He is a master space and missile operator with numerous ground-launched missile and Intercontinental Ballistic Missile alerts as well as 17 DoD, NASA or commercial spacelift missions, including NASA's Mars Pathfinder launch.
