Malmstrom teen wins military YOY award Published Feb. 27, 2014 By Stevie Brown 341st Force Support Squadron MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- Youth Centers on all military installations around the world are affiliated with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Youth of the Year is one of BGCA's premier youth recognition programs and recognizes sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community. Youth Programs member, Jared McMullen; son of Capt. Jeremy McMullen; 341st Operations Support Squadron ICBM codes controller, and wife, Tara; was selected as Malmstrom's Military YOY. Jared will represent Malmstrom at the Montana YOY competition in Helena, Mont., for the title of Military YOY and a $1,000 college scholarship. Jared is a role model for his younger sisters and the youth at the youth center. Jared is very motivated to further his education; preferably in a business degree. As a youth programs member, Jared is always helping younger youth with homework, playing games or just being there with advice. Being named Military YOY is the highest honor a youth programs member can receive. As youth programs premier youth recognition program, Military YOY recognizes outstanding contributions to a member's family, school, community and Youth Center, as well as overcoming personal challenges and obstacles. Military YOY encourages members to reach their full potential by achieving academic success, leading healthy lifestyles and contributing to their communities. If Jared wins at the state level he will compete for the title of Military Region YOY (against five other military regional winners) and an additional $10,000 scholarship. Five regional winners and one military winner will advance to Washington, D.C., in September to compete for the title of BGCA's National YOY. The National YOY receives an additional scholarship of up to $50,000 from The Rick and Susan Goings Foundation and has the opportunity to meet with the President of the United States in the White House.
