The sun is finally out and the Montana rivers and lakes are calling our names. Summertime in "Big Sky Country" is one of the prettiest summers around, but can be one of the most dangerous times of the year if preventative measures aren't in place. This article includes a few key points that will enable you and your friends and family to safely enjoy water sports and activities during the Critical Days of Summer. Jump on in, the water's great!

Some of these water sports and activities include boating, jet skiing and water skiing. While taking part in these activities, you should always wear a life jacket. Before ever operating a boat or jet ski, it is important to receive proper boating safety instructions. Personnel should know and be comfortable in the type of boat and or jet ski they are operating in.

The Air Force summer losses from June to September of 2009 to 2013 included three fatalities and 51 injuries with a total cost of injuries at $878,661. In 2012, there were 2,454 accidents, including 288 deaths and 1,839 injuries while operating a vessel. Taking into account all of these statistics, 310 of these accidents were reported due to excessive speed. Another enormous issue is operating equipment on the water while consuming alcohol. Of the facts listed, alcohol was involved in 280 of the accidents, attributing for 109 deaths and 227 injuries.

Bottom line is you should never operate any type of machinery or equipment while consuming alcohol whether on the land or in the water. Lastly, make sure to remain hydrated and to constantly apply sunscreen - especially when participating in vigorous activities.

Summer can be the most enjoyable time of year for almost everyone. It's a time for ice cream cones, cold drinks and boats. Don't ruin your summer by not abiding by simple rules. As always, utilize the Air Force core values in everything you do.
