Critical Days of Summer week 8: Bicycle safety Published July 22, 2014 By 1st Lt. Kristin Geisz 12th Missile Squadron MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- During the Critical Days of Summer, it is important that you enjoy summer activities to their maximum. One of those activities is bicycling. While riding your bicycle, it is important that you are prepared for the current, outside conditions. Stay hydrated; heat stroke accounts for approximately 300 deaths per year in the United States. Have a water bottle or hydration pack available to you while riding. Be prepared for your bicycle activity. Make sure to get plenty of rest the night before your bike ride. Also, warm your muscles up by stretching before you start. Make sure you ride with a cell phone and a portable tire pump in case you run in to trouble. Always let someone know whenever you are going on an outdoor activity in order to ensure that someone knows of your whereabouts at all times. Great Falls is a great location for bicycle riding. There are over 32 courses in the local area that are bicycle accessible. The River's Edge Trail is a great place to start. If you are going to ride along roads with vehicle traffic, make sure to ride with traffic and make yourself as visible as possible. Make sure to ride defensively and always wear your helmet! Rules for bicycle safety: · Maintain control of your bicycle at all times · Protect yourself and reduce risk of head injury by wearing a helmet · Be conspicuous - wear bright colors and be visible · Ride ready - be alert and predictable · Think ahead - communicate your intentions · Always ride with traffic
