During the Critical Days of Summer, it is important that you enjoy summer activities to their maximum. One of those activities is swimming.

While swimming, it is important that you are prepared for the current, outside conditions. If there is a chance for lightning, do not get in to the water. Make sure that if you decide to swim in an ocean or a river that you do so with another individual. Swimming in bodies of natural water present an inherent risk of underwater dangers such as rocks, shrubs and sandbars.

Swimmers should also keep an eye out for recreational water vehicles. Boats can be easily seen on the water, but they cannot see swimmers as easily. If you are swimming and find yourself within a rip current, swim across the current. Never try to swim against the current. Always be prepared. Anytime you are going on an outdoor activity, ensure that someone knows of your whereabouts at all times.

Great Falls is a great location for river floating. Make sure to bring personal flotation devices, be aware of your surroundings, know the weather and never drink and swim. From 2009 to 2013, the Air Force lost seven members from summer swimming incidents. Enjoy this summer activity and always use common sense!

Rules for swimming safety:
· Never swim alone in the ocean or river
· Be careful of currents, sandbars, inlets, hidden trees and shrubs
· Do not swim if you have been drinking
· Know the weather conditions (do not get in water if there is the potential for lightning)
· Beginners should use a flotation device while swimming
