MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont -- This year's Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana, annual base picnic is just around the corner.
On Aug. 28, the free picnic will begin at 11 a.m. and will go on until 2 p.m. Located at Sun Plaza Park, the picnic will be open to all military personnel, including base civilians and their dependants and retirees. Pets are not allowed, so please leave them at home.
Starting at 10 a.m., there will be a Chiefs versus Eagles softball game at the adult baseball fields across from the auditorium.
At 11 a.m., Col. Tom Wilcox, 341st Missile Wing commander, will provide opening remarks before the food line opens. Hamburgers, hotdogs, brats, potato salad, baked beans, chips, dessert and soda will be served.
Other activities include a balloon art, face painting, snow cones and paint ball. There will also be 14 vendors at the picnic showing their unique products and wares.
The classic car show starts at 11 a.m. with categories inluding best muscle, best classic, best custom, best paint, best interior, best engine, best motorcycle, best truck, best import and ugliest truck.The entry is free and trophies will be handed out for people's choice and ugliest truck. People can enter their car, truck or motorcycle. For those interested in participating, register at the fitness center or contact James Muscle at 731-3621. The winners will be announced around 1:45 p.m.
There will be demonstrations by the 341st Security Forces Squadron military working dogs and their handlers at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Bus tours will be provided for family members wanting to learn more about the base. They will receive the wing mission brief, visit the Missile Procedures Trainer (launch control simulator) in Bldg. 500 and the T-9 maintenance trainer by the base museum. Tours are at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. Seating is limited, so register ahead of time by contacting the Community Support Coordinator, Lori Muzzana at 731-3481, or at the announcers table during the picnic.
Some base facilities will be closed Aug. 28 to support the base picnic including the Aces High Bowling Center, Youth Center (except school age), Arts and Crafts/Auto Hobby shop, Outdoor Recreation, pool and Family Child Care.
The Grizzly Bend will be open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the library will be open 9 to 11 a.m. and 2:30 to 5 p.m. The Child Development Center, fitness center, Education and Training Center, Elkhorn Dining Facility and lodging will remain open with no change in hours.
