VITA office looking for volunteers Published Jan. 12, 2015 By Airman 1st Class Dillon Johnston 341st Missile Wing Public Affairs MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- The 341st Missile Wing legal office is currently looking for volunteers to assist the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance office file returns for service members on base. The office is offering free training courses from Jan. 12-16 at building 407, classroom A12, for those interested in helping out. Upon successful completion, members will be certified to process tax paperwork and help their wingmen get tax money back without having to deal with costly filing fees. The positions currently needed to be filled are greeters, distributors of advertising, tax preparers and/or quality viewers. "Every year, hundreds of Airmen benefit from others serving them during tax season," said Capt. Clayton Cox, 341st MW assistant staff judge advocate. "Malmstrom Air Force Base tax preparation volunteers save their wingmen tens of thousands of dollars in filing fees yearly, while procuring them hundreds of thousands of dollars in returns. "However, without volunteer support, none of this is possible," he added. Due to current manning restrictions and a lack of volunteers, the VITA office can only assist Team Malmstrom members E-4 and below as well as their dependents. "We hope that we will be able to open it up to others as we get more volunteers," Cox said. Volunteers are able to work on a flexible schedule during tax season, and can help out as much or as little as they'd like. "This year we are trying to do more tax work (after 4:30 p.m.) so that volunteering will better coexist with general duties," Cox said. "While we hope for season-long commitment, we understand that things come up." To find out more or to sign up for the classes, contact Cox at 731-3503 or Staff Sgt. Kimberly Corbridge at 731-2706.
