Appointment no-shows cost in more ways than one Published March 25, 2015 By Capt. Patricia Kodis 341st Medical Group MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- Our goal at the 341st Medical Group is to meet the healthcare needs of all our military members and their families by providing the best possible medical care and access to our services. In order to provide the appointments needed for our enrolled patients and their families, we need help in preventing no-shows. Last minute cancellations and/or not showing up for scheduled appointments have a negative impact on everyone's access to services and can adversely affect the readiness mission. In 2014, there were 3,141 missed appointments at the 341st MDG, valued at more than $854,352. This value not only represents lost productivity, but also significant wasted resources that could be better used elsewhere. We understand that unforeseen circumstances may sometimes occur resulting in missed appointments, but when individuals "no show" for an appointment it may not only negatively affect their medical readiness, but also prevents family or colleagues from using that appointment to receive their medical care. To decrease the amount of no-shows, the 341st MDG appointment reminder system calls patients two days prior to their scheduled appointment. If individuals get these calls and no longer need the appointment, please let the medical group know so they can make that appointment available to someone else. Please note, however, that it uses the most current phone numbers listed in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, so it is critical to update current phone number in DEERS. Information can be update by calling (800) 538-9552. Help us take care of our members and their families by canceling at least 24 hours in advance so that un-needed appointments can be offered to another patient. Cancellations can be made by contacting the 341st MDG central appointments line at 731-4MED(4633), or cancel online at www.tricareonline.com. In addition, individuals enrolled in MiCare can also take advantage of emailing their provider and his/her team directly. As we continue to improve our processes, we welcome feedback. Thank you for helping us take care of our military members and their families. To provide feedback, contact Capt. Patricia Kodis, 341st MDG Group practice manager at 731-4460 or via e-mail at 341mdg.pa@us.af.mil.
