Legal assistance - we are here for you Published June 29, 2015 By 1st Lt. Elise Girani Malmstrom Legal Office MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- There may be no such thing as a free lunch (unless you're lucky enough to eat at the dining facility), but there is free legal assistance. Through the legal assistance program, the Malmstrom Legal Office strives to support both individual Airmen and the mission. We do this in a variety of ways. We provide wills, living wills, powers of attorneys and notaries. In addition, we offer advice on various legal topics such as domestic relations, consumer affairs and landlord/tenant issues. Every year we also run a Tax Assistance Program. One of our most popular programs is will services. Every Tuesday from 8 to 10 a.m., by appointment, the legal office provides wills to service members. A will is a legal document that states who individuals would like their money, real estate and personal belongings to go to upon their death. In addition, wills allow individuals to appoint a guardian to care for minor children in the event of death. Private attorneys typically charge around $300 to create a will. Here, at the legal office, we will create a will for Airmen and their dependents for free. To set up an appointment, call the office at 406-731-2878. An appointment typically runs 30 minutes to an hour and individuals will leave our office with a fully executed will. Further, notary and powers of attorney services are available on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The legal office also provides free legal advice to those eligible for legal assistance, to include active-duty members. We offer advice on a multitude of topics including divorce, child custody, landlord/tenant issues and the Servicememebers Civil Relief Act. On Wednesdays, 9-11 a.m., we have legal assistance by appointment only. On Thursdays, 8-10 a.m., we offer walk-in legal assistance. This means if members come to the legal office anytime between 8 and 10 a.m. on Thursday, they will see an attorney about the legal issue they are dealing with. Additionally, each year, the legal office runs a Tax Assistance Program. This program is primarily aimed at helping younger Airmen complete their taxes. When tax season rolls around next year, keep an eye out for information about this program. An attorney, with the help of trained volunteers, can help fill out your taxes. The Air Force's legal assistance website is located at https://aflegalassistance.law.af.mil. General information and sample forms can be found on the website covering a wide range of useful legal topics including protections under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, taxation, immigration, marriage and divorce.
