Team Malmstrom is ringing in the New Year with the kickoff of the annual Largest Loser Competition, running Jan. 5 - Feb. 27.

Coming off of the holiday season can be difficult for some people to get back into eating healthy and hitting the gym regularly.

The Largest Loser Competition challenges Airmen to compete against each other by conducting weekly weigh-ins, exchanging exercise tips and trying new healthy recipes in their diet.

"The purpose of the Largest Loser is to get people motivated with prizes to lose weight and get into shape," said Senior Airman Dyan Murray, 341st Force Support Squadron and special events coordinator. "Since this is a competition with a chance of winning something at the end, people will push themselves even more to lose weight and stay focused."

Airmen who wished to participate formed teams with friends, family and their peers to enforce camaraderie and make the experience of losing those holiday turkey pounds more enjoyable.

"It's always more fun to do things when you are with a group of people that can all push each other and help one another reach their goal," said Murray. "When we did the competition last year, the team that won all came out to get their prizes and genuinely seemed happy with their team success."

Not only does the event help Airmen improve on an individual level, it helps Team Malmstrom improve as a whole.

"We all need to maintain a fit lifestyle to be able to perform the duties required (as military members), and this event is doing just that," said Murray. "In order to maintain a healthy weight we need a stable diet and a good exercise plan."

Airman morale and readiness and being fit to fight are both priorities for Wing One.

"This event falls into the Wing's fitness priority," said Murray. "By having an event that can help get people to where they need to be, we are not only helping them but also helping each other reach our fitness goal and be fit and ready."

As a team, Malmstrom must be in good physical condition to be able to withstand the many physical and emotional challenges the nation asks Airmen to give every single day.

The Largest Loser Competition propels Team Malmstrom members to strive to be the best that they can be.
