A new softball team is in the works for Malmstrom and tryouts took place March 12-13.

This past weekend, roughly 40 players tried out to be a part of the 15-player team.

According to Staff Sgt. James Fulcher, 341st Security Forces Group evaluator and softball team point of contact, the idea of having a base softball team has been in the works for years. Due to the amount of interest they had this year, Senior Master Sgts. Anthony Formell, 341st Security Support Squadron superintendent, and Eric Butt, 341st Missile Maintenance Squadron first sergeant, decided this was the year to start.

Fulcher said having an opportunity to represent Malmstrom and travel to military softball tournaments is definitely a morale booster.

"Military softball is huge across bases throughout the U.S. and overseas," said Fulcher. "It gives individuals assigned to the base that love softball something to be excited about and proud of."

The team will travel to military softball tournaments across the U.S. to represent the 341st Missile Wing. Although it will be considered permissive TDY, expenses will need to be paid for by the individual member.

The team plans to hold fundraising events to help pay for some of the out-of-pocket costs.

"The team is excited to compete in several tournaments this year," said Fulcher. "We also look forward to growing the program over the next several years to come."

Those that missed the first try out session can come to the softball fields across from the base theater March 19-20 from noon to 4 p.m.
