Three C-130s from the Montana Air National Guard's 186th Airlift Squadron dropped High Velocity Container Deliver System bundles on Malmstrom's flight line for a training exercise March 5.

The aircraft flew together, each dropping bundles weighing approximately 1,000 pounds. This is the first time the 186th AS has dropped shipments of this size on Malmstrom's flight line, also known as Charging Charlie.

"These drops are part of the required training to support our war-time missions as well as supporting our state if and when this capability is needed," said Lt. Col. Trace Thomas, 186th Airlift Squadron commander. "We have already been dropping HVCDS (bundles) at other drop zones in the state but this is a great opportunity to train closer to home and interact with our active-duty neighbors."

Thomas added that using Malmstrom's flight line for training saves time and resources as well as reduces risks associated with traveling two and a half hours each way to recover the drops.

The combined training between MANG and Malmstrom has allowed the relationship between bases to soar and helps to create a better understanding of the unique missions.

"It continues to allow us to work together on a day-to-day basis and it strengthens our already outstanding relationship," said Thomas. "This is yet another opportunity for our Airmen to integrate with their active-duty counterparts while we train to support our home and nation."
