Malmstrom hosted its first ever cooking club March 31 at the Chapel Annex.

"As soon as the idea was posted, every slot but two was filled within two hours," said Master Sgt. Micheal Filipovich, 341st Logistics Readiness Squadron first sergeant and cooking club coordinator.

Along with Filipovich, Master Sgt. Sherry Matthews, 341st Civil Engineer Squadron operations management section chief, wanted to open people up to new ways of cooking different foods.

"It is not just for families, everyone is welcome," said Filipovich. "It is an opportunity for people to get out of their homes and rooms to come interact with others who share similar interests."

Filipovich and Matthews wanted to teach attendees how to cook a meal that was simple and easy enough for someone who is not comfortable in the kitchen to be able to recreate at home.

"We wanted to target Airmen, young families and even people like us who have large families," said Matthews.

At the event, participants learned how to make stir-fry and a dessert with ingredients all from a dollar store. The attendees were also provided with recipe cards and sent home with a meal big enough for four people.

"I love cooking and I love food," said Senior Airman Susana Sweeny, 819th RED HORSE Squadron structures technician and attendee. "The event went over and beyond my expectations. I was really surprised at how easy it was to make a dessert using items from a dollar store."

The cooking club is scheduled to meet once a month and is open to everyone on the base. Next month's meal will include spaghetti squash.
