The Malmstrom Crochet Club, led by Staff Sgt. Sheena Young, the 341st Missile Wing command chief executive, is giving back to the local community in new and innovative ways.

"We (donate to) organizations that take hats, scarves, gloves and mittens," said Young. "It's nice to give back. So far we are looking to donate to cancer patients, rescue missions and children in foster care."

According to Young, the main goal of the crochet club is to have fun and give back to the community.

"It's giving back and doing something we love," said Young. "It's mixing two worlds into one. It's a bunch of people who get together and hang out. It's good to learn from other people's experiences."

For Young, the crochet club is a place where she can go and enjoy herself.

"I am new at crocheting, but I love it," said Young. "Everyone talks. It is nice to have that connection with other people. We are learning about them, they are learning about us. We have all ranks there, but none of us wear our uniforms. It's nice to have other crocheters together."

The club has received various donations from the local community as well as people who have heard what the club is doing.

"I have gotten three bags of hats and scarves from a lady whose daughter is stationed here," said Young. "Another lady from the east coast is mailing a box of hats, scarves and blankets to donate to the crochet club. People want to help, because they heard about us."

The crochet club is open to everyone. Active duty members, civilians and dependents are given an opportunity to network and learn from one another, while being united by a common interest.

Yarn and hooks are provided for those wanting to learn.

The crochet club has meetings every other Thursday from 5 - 7 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for April 21 at the Grizzly Bend.

"It's something new and different," said Young. "We are helping people."
