David Cook to rock with Malmstrom

MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. --  Nashville singer-songwriter and "American Idol" winner David Cook, is slated to rock out with Team Malmstrom during a free concert at the 3-Bay Hangar May 28 at 4 p.m.

According to Cook's official website, he will be performing for U.S. military personnel and their sponsored guests at 16 different Air Force bases around the country.

Cook has performed for U.S. troops at military installations around the world including Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, the Persian Gulf and across Europe.

"It is always such an honor to get to perform for our military men and women," Cook said. "I'm thankful for the opportunity to do so again, as it gives me and my band another chance to say thank you to so many for their sacrifice to our country."

According to a release from Air Force Services Activity, when Cook moved to Nashville in 2012, he had immediate success co-writing country tunes, including the Top 20 single "Kiss You Tonight" for David Nail in 2014.

"Working in Nashville opened me up creatively to trying different things," Cook said. "Writing for country acts has been freeing in the sense that I can bring out that side of my creativity and it brought some freshness to the other side of what I like to do."

In 2008, he accompanied his younger brother Andrew to audition for "American Idol." He auditioned on a whim and wound up winning the competition.

Cook has since released his newest album "Digital Vein," which was released in September of 2015. He said it was named as a progression from his last independent record from 2006, "Analog Heart."

"Analog Heart" and "Digital Vein" bookended a tumultuous decade in Cook's life and career after fronting a Kansas City-based bar band for 10 years.

Cook forged a new career as a songwriter after moving to Nashville in 2012 but has continued to tour as well.

"Growing up, music was always readily available to me but it was never something that was forced upon me," Cook said. "It was just instilled in me early as something I wanted to do."
