Flag Day, a respect to Old Glory

MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. --  Community members from Great Falls, Montana, gathered at Overlook Park to celebrate National Flag Day June 14.

The ceremony included speeches by guest speakers from the community, presentation of the colors by members of the 120th Airlift Wing Honor Guard and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance by local Boy and Girl Scout troops.

The 120th AW performed a flyover specifically for the event as Old Glory was raised.

Col. Christopher Phillips, 341st Medical Group commander, was one of the guest speakers at the event.

In his speech, Phillips gave a brief description of the history of the flag as well as the history behind how Flag Day came to be.

In 1916, National Flag Day was proclaimed to be held on June 14 by President Woodrow Wilson, but was not officially written into law until 1949 by President Harry Truman.

The ceremony marked the 100 year anniversary of the proclamation.

Phillips said that to him the red, white and blue flag represents a symbol for service members.

"It's humbling to stand here and reflect on all the sacrifices made (by service members) for our flag and the freedom that it stands for," said Phillips. "The men and women of Team Malmstrom ensure our liberty and freedom 365 days a year defending America with safe, secure and effective nuclear forces and combat-ready Airmen. I think of these Airmen and all of those who have fought for our flag."

Phillips also said that he feels the flag is a physical representation of patriotism and hope.

"To me, our flag also means patriotism and pride," said Phillips. "I am proud of my country. Our flag also means hope. It is a symbol of all that America is. The flag represents a living country, and is itself considered a living thing."
