Civilian honored with GEICO award Published May 3, 2007 By Laura Malamud GEICO Communications Department MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- John P. Gilmore is the 2006 recipient of the GEICO Public Service Award for his volunteer work in the field of fire prevention and safety. He works as the assistant fire chief for fire prevention with the 341st Civil Engineer Squadron, here, providing education and expertise on how to prevent fire in the workplace. As assistant fire chief, Mr. Gilmore and his fire prevention team have been named the "best fire prevention program" in Air Force Space Command, and earned four consecutive Command Inspector General Professional Team awards. Mr. Gilmore also worked on a number of fire prevention education materials for both the base and the community. He developed the first U.S. Air Force video program, which teaches safe fire practices for families living in military housing and created a comprehensive training program on fire protection for missile facility personnel. He also coordinated the installation of 5,000-gallon emergency water supply tanks at each missile alert facility. Mr. Gilmore's fire prevention work has helped ensure all base construction projects meet national fire protection requirements, eliminating cost overruns and identifying safety issues early in the design process. As a member of the Great Falls Area Safety and Health Council, Mr. Gilmore also provided local families with safety and fire extinguisher training. Mr. Gilmore and his wife, Anna Maria, have two children. GEICO's Public Service Awards each year honor five civilian career federal employees and retirees for outstanding achievements in the fields of substance abuse prevention and treatment, fire prevention and safety, physical rehabilitation, and traffic safety and accident prevention. Each receives a $2,500 cash award and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., for a special recognition ceremony.
