Three students earn Fisher House scholarships Published June 15, 2007 By Airman 1st Class Dillon White 341st Space Wing Public Affairs Office MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- Three local military family members were awarded $1,500 scholarships May 4 from the Fisher House Foundation, officials from the Defense Commissary Agency recently announced. Danielle R. Mullens, from Harlowton, plans to major in musical performance at Montana State University in Bozeman starting in the fall. The 17-year-old also plans to make singing or teaching English a career. Richard S. Morrison, from Sand Coulee, plans to major in business or aviation at Rocky Mountain College in September. The 18-year-old hopes to own a small ranch, earn his pilot's wings and own a small plane. Amanda L. Ingman, also from Sand Coulee, will be a senior next fall at Dickinson State University. Ms. Ingman has been attending the college on a cheerleading scholarship the past three years. However, this year she intends to set cheerleading aside to aggressively pursue internships. She also intends to remain active in student government and community service. High school seniors and college students who have applied for a scholarship are selected by the Fisher House Foundation based upon meritorious achievement in academic studies, school and community activities and leadership. A written essay is also required. "We received 30 applications this year, so we were able to award three recipients," said John Nelson, commissary manager. "For every 10 applications we receive, Fisher House selects one schoarship recipient." Look for applications for next year's selections at the commissary in November, or go to the commissaries Web site at www.commissaries.com to download one, Mr. Nelson said. Applications need to be turned in to the Malmstrom commissary secretary Susi Schamp, or mailed to the commissary if the applicant is unable to deliver it in person. The commissary then mails the applications to the Fisher House Foundation for selection. Deadlines for applications vary each year, but are generally sometime in February, Mr. Nelson said. "I really encourage people here on base to talk to their kids and be aware of this incredible opportunity," Mr. Nelson said. The Fisher House Foundation provides temporary housing for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and Veterans Administration medical centers.
