A glow from strings of lights reflects off the hardwood floor as amplifiers hum in response to picks grazing the strings on electric guitars.

Christian vibes have reverberated through the Detour before and beginning on Oct. 14, a contemporary service began Sunday mornings at 10 a.m.

The band that plays during the service is comprised of Malmstrom Airmen and the service is lead by a 341st Space Wing chaplain.

In addition to live music with a contemporary feel, the Detour provides those in attendance with free beverages like sodas and cappuccinos.

"The whole worship experience at the Detour has a very intimate coffee-house feel to it," said 1st Lt. Grant Hosmer, 341st Missile Security Forces Squadron member and band member. "The service is frontloaded with a lot of praise music. We play contemporary music, oldies and goodies, rock, gospel, folk and traditional ... the whole gamut. There is something for everyone and a place for all."

The service focuses on Airmen and the content of future services will depend on Airmen feedback, said Chaplain (Capt.) Jeromy Wells, 341st Space Wing chaplain.

"The service was born out of the Protestant parish and it offers another opportunity to worship," Chaplain Wells said. "Right now we are also playing videos during services which deal with practical applications of life skills."

Airmen split up in groups to discuss the video then share their thoughts with each other during the Nov. 4 service.

The service at the Detour reaches out to people who may not actively attend services at the chapel or have a faith community to call their own, Lieutenant Hosmer said.

"Led by Chaplain Wells, it's a safe place for Airmen, families, singles, couples, the young and the experienced to come, and we can all be part of something bigger than ourselves. No matter where you are in your 'walk,' there is benefit to be had. It is open and welcome to anyone looking for a place to fit in."
