Two of Malmstrom's services programs won Air Force Space Command-level awards for the period of Oct. 1, 2006 to Sept. 30.

Outdoor Recreation and Aces High Bowling and Entertainment Center earned top honors in AFSPC again due to their outstanding innovation, management, customer focus and satisfaction, and operational results.

"We have an advantage of having such diverse outdoor activities possible, but ODR's success can mainly be attributed to the enthusiastic staff that is committed to helping Malmstrom personnel have a great time while stationed here," said Jim Beisel, outdoor adventure programmer.

ODR secured their position as ODR Program of the Year with their creative and inexpensive activities that take place not only on base, but also around Great Falls and various other parts of Montana. ODR also makes efficient use of their volunteers to ensure safe, cost-effective and fun excursions for all patrons.

From the inside of a mountain to the top of one, ODR has exposed Team Malmstrom to underground caving, hiking, biking and backpacking trips.

As the winter season approaches, ODR's $48,000 ski inventory makes it Malmstrom's one-stop shop for winter sports. Not only does ODR supply the equipment needed for skiing, snowboarding and staying warm, but the staff and volunteers also provide transportation to and from ski resorts on certain days throughout the season.

"Having great programs and rentals is easier when you know you are going to have participation in trips and classes," Mr. Beisel said. "The more participants we have, the more we are able to provide. We have the momentum and intend to keep it."

"It is nice to be recognized for the work we have done, but the real reward is knowing people have a good time on our trips," Mr. Beisel said.

ODR has won Program Awards in 1993, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2005.

Aces High Bowling and Entertainment Center also earned the award for Bowling Center Program of the Year.

Aces High has a little something for everyone at Malmstrom including leagues, youth bowling and activities, discounts for dorm residents, 15 TVs in the Strike Zone, which is the sports and TV room in Aces High, and is one of the most popular lunch locations on base - serving nearly 130 people daily between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Along with the services offered, Aces High stands out with their management and customer service.

The bowling center purchased a $27,000 Kegel Lane Custodian lane oiler making it the best in Montana. Also, a $1.6 million upgrade to the snack bar is in the works to ensure Aces High provides the wing with the best for years to come.

"I am very proud of my staff for continuously upholding the standards that set us apart - it proves we put our customers first" said Bryon Mullett, manager of Aces High. The staff of Aces High also goes above and beyond to provide food, movies and easy access to bowling scores at www.bowl.com

"Without our customers, we can't operate. The fact they continue to support our programs and services is the reason we can stay in the competition. There are a lot of recreational opportunities, both on base and off, to choose from, but our customers keep coming back."

Happy customers are likely the reason Aces High had a $17,000 increase in profit over previous years. Customer focus and motivated management are key in making Aces High AFSPC's winner year after year.

"I have received a lot of support for upgrades to the facility over the years from local leadership and the command which has made our facility one of the best," Mr. Mullett said. "If you factor in the dedication and creativity of the staff, I would have to say that is the winning combination."

Aces High has been selected as the best bowling facility in AFSPC six of the last seven years, taking the top award in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006.
