Tips, etiquette guidelines for safety on the slopes

Malmstrom's first Wing Ski Day of the season will be Jan. 25 at the Showdown Ski Area. Free equipment is available for rent at Outdoor Recreation for E-4 and below; E-5 and higher will receive a 50 percent discount. Transportation will be available through Outdoor Recreation and will depart at 8 a.m. from the Grizzly Bend Club parking lot.

To make the experience more safe and enjoyable for everyone on the slopes, the National Ski Patrol (www.nsp.org) offers these skiing and snowboarding etiquette guidelines:
- Always stay in control and be able to stop or avoid other people and objects;
- People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them;
- You must not stop where you obstruct a trail or are not visible from above;
- Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others;
- Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment;
- Observe all posted signs and warning. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas; and
- Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.
