A simulated electronic launch of a minuteman test is scheduled here April 14 and 15.
The SELM test will be conducted to verify the Minuteman III weapon system operates as intended and tests aspects of a missile system that cannot be tested unless activated.

"Performing these tests also proves to the world that this is an effective weapon system," said Lt. Col. Michael Port, 12th Missile Squadron director of operations.

During the April 14 test, six Minuteman III ICBMs will be connected to two missile alert facilities. These missiles will be isolated from the missile complex communication system to ensure commands only go to the test sites. A second day of simulated launch testing will be conducted via the Airborne Command Post, said Capt. Wendy Quick, 08-1M SELM test director.

The test will evaluate procedures from the missileers key-turns up to the first stage ignition without launching the missile.

All missiles in the test will be safed, making them unable to actually launch.

"Safety is paramount," Colonel Port said. "At the site where the launch facility enclosure door will be opening, increased safety measures have been added."

To achieve this, the 341st Civil Engineer Squadron has emplaced 6500 sand bags in front of the door to capture it after openning.

"This is one of the most complex weapon systems ever designed by man," Colonel Port said. "It never ceases to amaze me the sheer genius that went into designing this system in terms of redundancy, safety and combat capability."

The combat readiness of the MM III weapon system and the men and women charged with its continual operation, maintenance and security will be tested.

"This test plays a vital role in our strategic deterrent mission at Malmstrom," said Col. Sandy Finan, 341st Space Wing commander. "Our Airmen are the best trained in the world and I'm confident they are 100 percent capable and prepared to accomplish this important task."
