Three local students recently learned they had been selected to receive a $1,500 scholarship each from the Fisher House Foundation through the Defense Commissary Agency's annual Scholarships for Military Children program.

Ryan Halko, of Sand Coulee, Mont., will be attending Montana State University - Northern in the fall. This will be his freshman year and he plans to major in diesel technologies and minor in business.

"I would like to pursue a career in diesel technology with a final goal of working in upper management or owning my own company," he said.

Heather Ingman, also of Sand Coulee, will be a senior at the University of Montana this fall. She is majoring in psychology and hopes to become a clinical child psychologist upon graduation. She has been very active in the Missoula community throughout her college career and intends to continue doing so her final year.

"I plan to become more involved in the psychology department next year, as I will be participating on a psychology research team, am a member of Psi Chi (the National Honor Society for Psychology) and I hope to proctor for one of the Psychology 100 courses in the spring," she said.

Katie Kain, the third recipient , of Great Falls, will also be a senior at the University of Montana this fall. She is majoring in elementary education.

"I would like to teach fourth or fifth grade, hopefully in a Department of Defense school one day," she said.

High school seniors and college students who are family members of active-duty or retired military members are eligible to compete annually for the scholarships. The Fisher House Foundation selects winners based on meritorious achievement in academic studies, school and community activities as well as leadership. A written essay is also required.

For every 10 applicants received by the Malmstrom commissary, Fisher House selects one scholarship recipient, according to John Nelson, commissary manager.
"I encourage people here on base to talk to their kids and make them aware of this incredible opportunity," Mr. Nelson said.
