Increased thefts reported on base Published June 10, 2009 By Investigator Ricky Hoffman 341st Security Forces Squadron MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- Within the last 30 days, Malmstrom's Dispatch Center received two calls of vehicle thefts and more than five cases of items taken from unsecure vehicles. Because of our previously low crime rate, we have been lulled into a false sense of security. In all the reported incidents the thefts could have been prevented if the victims' vehicles had been secured. Here are some basic crime prevention tips everyone can do: · Get to know your neighbors and become familiar with your every day surroundings. By doing so, you will be more apt to recognize a vehicle or person(s) who don't belong. · Do not give a would-be thief the opportunity. Be security conscious, lock doors and ensure windows are shut before leaving your home/vehicle unattended. · Do not make yourself a desirable target. When leaving your vehicle unattended, ensure you take all valuables with you or place them out of sight. · Pick up the phone and report all suspicious activities or crimes in progress. Remember as many details about the event as possible and immediately call the Dispatch Center by dialing 731-3895. In an era of doing more with less, crime prevention can no longer be the sole responsibility of the security forces members. Crime is becoming a wide-spread fact of life. However, being armed with knowledge and taking action, will lead us into a more secure tomorrow. After all, crime prevention is everyone's business. Spring and summer months show an increase in theft related crimes. Don't be a victim.
