What complaints are commonly seen across the IG community?

In the next several monthly articles, I will highlight a recurring issue brought to Air Force IGs, as well as associated pitfalls that can easily be avoided. This month's feature is denial of reenlistment.

A typical complaint heard in the IG community is, "I have been unfairly denied reenlistment."

When reenlistment is denied, there are certain procedures that must be followed to avoid unfair consideration for our Airmen and violation of Air Force policy. Per AFI 36-2606, para. 1.10., the rater and commander of a member who is denied reenlistment must thoroughly review that person's records to ensure the reasons for denying reenlistment are documented and can be validated (i.e. performance feedbacks, LOCs, etc.). Also, to properly process the AF Form 418, it must be signed and dated with any supporting documentation to substantiate non-selection decisions attached. Commanders (not the members) are responsible for sending all copies of the form to the Military Personnel Section for processing.

Commanders must also schedule personal interviews with non-selected Airmen to discuss specific reasons for their non-selection, areas needing improvement, appeal opportunity, promotion ineligibility, and the possibility of future reconsideration and selection.

For questions or concerns about this or any other matter you think needs IG attention, please contact your local IG office at 731-7076/7091 or their 24-hour Hotline at 731-6669.
