Wing One's Health and Wellness Center recently threw down the gauntlet with a declaration of a "Snack Bar War," pitting nine participating snack bars against one another throughout the month of September to further promote a "Fit-to-Fight" lifestyle.

The snack bar, managed by Senior Airmen Dynesha Adams and Patricia Carnahan from the 341st Force Support Squadron Promotion and Reenlistment office took top dietary honors. As a trophy, the two won a selection of healthy food items from the HAWC worth $50, which they distributed to others in the Military Personnel Section and Finance office for free.

"It felt good to be recognized," Airman Adams said. "We go out shopping every week and go to several stores. We put effort into it and it was just nice that people notice."

The two Air Force Global Strike Command members stocked their snack bar with items like yogurt, string cheese and bottled water to out-perform the other eight pre-packaged participants. Points were awarded for several categories, among these were: arrangement, meal groups, food groups and the ratio of good to bad foods.

All competing snack bar managers were given surveys to hand out in their sections to determine what their fellow Total Force coworkers wanted and a list of healthy perishable and non-perishable alternatives for reference.

"We held the competition as a way to go around base to see how healthy or unhealthy people's snack options were and to give the people who facilitate these snack bars information on healthy options," said Jacque Maillet, HAWC health promotion dietician. "When we went through to score the teams, most had made great improvements in their selections."

Ms. Maillet said they plan to hold another "Snack Bar Wars" next year.
