April is Sexual Assault Prevention Month. As people continuously train and prepare to accomplish their day-to-day mission on-duty, it is easy to forget to prepare themselves for dangers off-duty.

Do you know how to prevent contact with, or escape a would-be attacker?

Although often-taboo subjects, sexual assault and rape are some of those dangers that affect every community and cause life altering impacts to survivors and their families.

While sexual assault and rape awareness can be very effective in preventing these crimes from occurring, some cases may require physical defense to escape an attacker.
The Rape Aggression Defense systems, or RAD, is a program teaching realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. Founded in 1989, the RAD systems of self-defense for women and children are currently taught at nearly 400 colleges, universities, rape crisis centers, and municipal, state and county law enforcement agencies. Since its inception, RAD Systems has certified more than 2,000 instructors, who, in turn, have taught the program to more than 45,000 women and children nationwide.

RAD teaches defense against rape, assault and abduction. The program is designed for the average woman with no previous experience or background in physical defense training. RAD Systems developed this course through years of research and has created a structured, responsible, defensible and dynamic program that remains the only self-defense program ever endorsed by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators.

Air Force Global Strike Command's Malmstrom Air Force Base will hold its first-ever RAD Course April 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It is open to all females ages 13 and older.

There is no cost to participate and each class member will receive both training and RAD Basic student manuals. Class size is limited to 15, so early registration is highly recommended. Sorry men, this class is for females only.

To register or for more information, call contact the Malmstrom AFB Sexual Assault Prevention and Response office at 731-4130. The location of the class will be given to the callers who register. For more information on the RAD systems, please visit www.rad-systems.com.
