Housing construction at Malmstrom is not something new. Upgrades to the housing units have been going on for quite some time and are slated to continue on through 2013.

Currently, Phase 7G is underway with demolition work being done on units on Gumwood Street and Dogwood and Locust Streets. These houses will be replaced with new, field grade housing units. While that construction is in progress, Phase 7H will get started.

"Phase 7H is set to begin Nov. 23 with demolition of units on Gumwood between Plum and Maple Street and will also include all of Kapok Street," said Timothy Neu, Chief of SABER projects for the 341st Civil Engineer Squadron. "This is a demolition contract with site restoration. No new houses will be constructed on these sites."

Phase 7H will be done in five cycles and Neu said that start dates are flexible, based on the ability of the contractor to complete the previous phases.

"The only contractual date we have is the completion date," he said. "All of the other dates can shift based upon the speed of the contractor to complete the prior phase."

In all, he said that 122 buildings, or 244 units, will be affected by Phase 7H. Much of this final work is in or around the vicinity of the back gate to access Loy Elementary School and while initially, this area will not be affected, areas in close proximity to it will be. It is important to remind students using this gate to obey construction safety guidelines.

Parents should make sure that children understand the dangers that construction sites possess. Signs like the ones pictured here will always be in place at active construction sites. Anyone with safety questions or concerns can contact the staff at the Wing Safety Office by calling 731-6719.
