Use both inbound lanes to access MAFB gates Published Oct. 28, 2011 By 341st Missile Wing Public Affairs Office staff MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- Depending on the time of the day and the amount of construction taking place on Malmstrom, the morning commute can be frustrating at times. In recent weeks, increased congestion in the intersection has caused drivers to become concerned and has also caused confusion on the proper use of both available lanes. The following is offered and drivers are encouraged to use both lanes. The Montana Code Annotated, or MCA, provided by Montana Legislative Services specifically outlines the procedures to follow when more than one lane is available. According to Section 61-8-333, Required position and method of turning at intersections, the operator of a vehicle intending to turn at an intersection shall do so as follows: (b) At an intersection where traffic is permitted to move in both directions on each roadway entering the intersection, an approach for a left turn must be made in that portion of the right half of the roadway nearest the center line of the roadway and by passing to the right of the center line where it enters the intersection. After entering the intersection, the left turn must be made so as to leave the intersection to the right of the center line of the roadway being entered. Whenever practicable, the left turn must be made in that portion of the intersection to the left of the center of the intersection. Additionally, in section (d) of the same MCA, it states that a person making a turn under the above conditions "is entitled to the full use of the lane from which the turn may be legally made." In other words, people approaching the 10th Avenue North Gate from the left should be using the leftmost lane to do so and moving over into the right lane as conditions allow, according to 341st Security Forces officials. Anyone with additional questions regarding this MCA can contact Tech. Sgt. Heather Geer at 731-4958.
