The time has finally come and Malmstrom's Army and Air Force Exchange Service is now carrying firearms.

On Nov. 19, Malmstrom's Exchange opened the doors with a new counter that sells rifles and handguns. With Montana being such a prevalent hunting state, many questioned exactly what took so long for Malmstrom to offer guns at the Exchange.

In order for a base to sell firearms, there is a lengthy process that must be completed. There is a long line of paperwork, as well as certifications and licenses that must be accomplished. The base commander must sign off on such an addition and the BX must contain a vault for storing firearms.

"It's about time." said John Lewis, gun shop supervisor. "We are extremely glad to be here and we look forward to longevity."

In order to purchase a firearm, there is also phase of paperwork that the customer must accomplish. A military I.D. is required, as well as a driver's license, PCS orders that prove the member is actually stationed here and not here on temporary duty, and a source of government documentation that shows a current address such as: vehicle registration, hunting/fishing license or a Montana state identification card.

The Exchange offers brands of such as Remington, Ruger, Winchester, Berretta and Springfield Armory. They also offer a special order service allowing the customer to request any specific brand not already stocked.

The shop only offers new firearms and does not have a trade-in/trade-up program. They do price-match with competing local vendors, and vow to always have the lowest price.

Payment options include cash, check, Military Star Card and also the AAFES Take Home Today card. The Take Home Today card is newly introduced to gun sales, and is excellent for larger purchases. Compared to the Military Star Card, this payment option offers a longer pay-off period allowing monthly payments to be substantially smaller.

"This is an excellent establishment and addition to Malmstrom. The staff are experienced and very knowledgeable, and they work with you on great deals and special orders," said Capt. (Ret.) H. J. Lamb.

With an enthusiastic staff, Malmstrom welcomes everyone to stop by the Exchange and visit the new gun shop. Even members who aren't sure about which type of firearm you may be interested in, swing by and simply get a feel for things.

The gun shop is located in the rear of the store, near the electronics.
