Engineers participate in readiness exercise Published March 5, 2012 By Capt. Timothy Morris 819th RED HORSE Squadron MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- The 819th RHS participated in the Grizzly Warrior 12-02 exercise recently. RED HORSE, which stands for Rapid Engineering Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineers, deployed their 4F9RV unit type code, or UTC. The 4F9RV UTC is a large, horizontal construction team equipment set that includes a light medium tactical vehicle, full size truck, and pallet of tools and equipment that weighs more than 24,000 lbs. When combined with the corresponding personnel UTC it can support horizontal tasks to include airfield repair, new construction, asphalt milling and paving, concrete repair, heavy earthwork and roads. The Installation Deployment Officer Jerry Chandler requested a large enough UTC to fill a C-17 for the exercise and the 819th RHS came through. "This was going to be just a Missile Wing exercise but it was great having RED HORSE on board for Team Malmstrom," said Lt. Col. Billy Wade, 341st Mission Support Group deputy commander. Col. Mark Zimmerhanzel, 819th RHS commander, wanted RED HORSE participation as soon as he was asked. "This is a good start for our exercises this year," he said. Currently, the 819th RHS is tasked to support NORTHCOM's Defense CBRNE Response Force, or DCRF, which includes responding nationwide to support state and FEMA emergency responders. They returned from Camp Atterbury in August from training with the Joint Task Force in Exercise Vibrant Response. Additional DCRF training and exercises are planned for the 819th RHS in 2012, plus its traditional round of troop training projects taking place all over the United States.
