March is Red Cross Month Published March 9, 2012 By Airman 1st Class Katrina Heikkinen 341st Missile Wing Public Affairs MALMSTROM AIR FORCE BASE, Mont. -- March is Red Cross Month, a time to recognize the efforts of those who work with the American Red Cross- here and around the world. The American Red Cross responds to nearly 70,000 disasters a year, providing shelter, food, emotional support and other necessities to those affected. Through a worldwide network, the American Red Cross provides 24-hour support to members of the military, veterans and their families - in war zones, military hospitals and on military installations around the world. Red Cross Blood Services collects and distributes more than 40 percent of the United States' blood supply. 9 million people across the United States receive American Red Cross training in first aid, water safety and other skills every year, according to the American Red Cross website. "Blood drives at Malmstrom Air Force Base are huge for the community," said Scott Shanahan, Great Falls American Red Cross senior donor recruitment representative. Each year the American Red Cross collects nearly 6.1 million units of blood from roughly 3.6 million volunteer donors. "If each person donated blood three times a year, there wouldn't be a blood shortage in the U.S.," Shanahan said. The Red Cross is an independent, volunteer-led organization, financially supported by voluntary public contributions. In celebration and support of this month, Malmstrom Air Force Base personnel are encouraged to partake in March's blood drive. For more information on March's blood drive, contact 2nd Lt. Brandon Clements at 731-6628.
